First Time Importer Information

Personal Effects

Personal goods are free from duty and tax if they are owned and used by you overseas for 12 months or more, if goods do not fall into this category then duty and GST may apply together with other Customs entry fees.

Documents Required

  • Full packing list
  • Copy of your Passport
  • Customs Personal Effects Form B534 Form
  • Value of the goods (the resell value)
  • Bill of Lading

Fees to expect

Australian Port Fee and Documentation Fee are billed at cost from freight forwarding agent/shipping line.

Our Agency Fee would include:

  • Customs clearance
  • Quarantine clearance
  • Cartage ex wharf to unpack depot
  • Container unpacking
  • Quarantine Inspection (Less than a container load of personal effects would not always need quarantine inspection)
Commercial import

Documents Required

  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Bill of Lading
  • Packing Declaration
  • ABN Number or Passport Copy – used to register as the importer
  • Treatment Certificate –if freight contains wooden items or wooden packaging is not ISPM 15 compliant.
  • Arrival Notices / Tax invoices from local freight forwarding agent / shipping line used

Fees to expect

  • Duty: may apply, depending on the commodity, which is a % of the FOB Value
  • GST: 10% of CIF Value + Duty if it applies

Vehicle import

If you are considering importing a Motor Vehicle to Australia, firstly you will need to apply for a Vehicle Import Approval (VIA). For further information and an application form, please visit the Australian Government website. There are many helpful resources online that can help Department of Infrastructure and Customs and Border Protection.

You will need to ensure you have all documents for the vehicle, including ownership and title documents.

On arrival Quarantine will inspect the vehicle and may instruct further cleaning if they are not satisfied with cleanliness. Our depot will arrange further steam cleaning of the vehicle. If Quarantine is not satisfied with further cleaning of the import, you may be instructed to destroy or re-export the vehicle at your expense.

  • Vehicle Import Approval
  • Copy of your Passport or ID
  • Bill of Lading
  • Purchase receipt or Invoice
  • A detailed list of any other goods or personal effects packed inside the vehicle
  • If required an Australian landed valuation report.

All costs incurred will be billed at cost. However given the nature of this import and the variables it is tought to list them all. Please feel free to contact us for a consult.

SAC - self assessed clearance

Goods imported by air and sea that have a value at or below the AUD$1000 import entry threshold. This does not apply to goods arriving via post, personal effects or carnets.

SAC entries do not attract any duties or GST however a electronic lodgement completed by Power Customs Services Pty Ltd will incur an agency fee.

  • Copy of your Passport or ID
  • Bill of Lading or airway bill

*Additional charges may apply for example: if wooden items are being imported, AQIS will want to inspect docs to confirm treatment has been done and if AQIS and or Customs want to take further action on your import. These fees are billed back to you at cost. If the container isn’t able to be delivered directly from the wharf, via yard charges and lift fees will also apply, which will be billed back to you at cost.
